Sarasota, Florida — January 22, 2025. The Circus Ring of Fame® is proud to announce the posthumous induction of legendary photojournalist Heinz Kluetmeier as an Advance Professional Group inductee. This prestigious honor recognizes Kluetmeier’s unparalleled contributions to the circus arts through his extraordinary photography.

Heinz Kluetmeier was a trailblazing photographer whose career spanned decades and multiple disciplines. Best known for his iconic sports photography with Sports Illustrated, Kluetmeier’s impact extended far beyond the realm of athletics. His innovative techniques and artistic eye captured the grandeur and drama of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus for more than 30 years, making him an indispensable figure in promoting and preserving the world’s most famous circus.

Kluetmeier served as primary photographer for Ringling’s annual productions, crafting striking images that showcased the vibrant artistry of the circus. His images were instrumental in driving ticket sales by gracing press materials, program books, and promotional campaigns that defined the cultural zeitgeist of the era.

A German-born American, Kluetmeier’s career was characterized by innovation. His engineering background allowed him to develop groundbreaking photographic techniques, enabling him to capture circus arts performances with stunning clarity and emotional depth.

Beyond his contributions to the circus, Kluetmeier’s illustrious career included coverage of every Olympic Games for Sports Illustrated from 1972 onward. His work appears on over 100 Sports Illustrated covers. He was also known for his pioneering underwater photography. Among his numerous accolades, he was the recipient of the Lucie Award for sports photography and became the first photographer inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
